Tourism Overview

The Matjhabeng Local Municipality offers visitors a diverse array of attractions – from the bustle of the Goldfields Casino to underground mine tours or for those looking to get away from city life, there are ample opportunities to explore our nature reserves and holiday resorts.

Nature and Scenery

The Sandveld Nature Reserve and the Willem Pretorius Game Reserve are two of the main attractions in the municipality.

History and Culture

The Winburg Voortrekker Monument, the Welkom Gold Museum, the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre and the Police Museum in Ventersburg are part of the history and culture of Matjhabeng. The Winnie Mandela House in Brandfort is currently in development as a museum. The municipal area also has variety of monuments and grave sites relating to World War II and the Anglo-Boer Wars.

Leisure

The Aventura Aldam Holiday Resort (Ventersburg), the Tikwe Lodge and Conference Centre (Virginia) and the Goldfields Casino (Welkom) are some of the main attractions in the area.

Adventure and Sport

Welkom in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality has become synonymous with motor sport since the establishment of the Phakisa Freeway. A range of activities is hosted annually at Phakisa. The Oppenheimer Park Golf Club is located just outside of Welkom and was designed by world-renowned South African gold course designed, Robert Gramsdell. Plenty of opportunities for water sport and adventure can be found at the Aldam Holiday Resort (Ventersburg) and the Tikwe Lodge and Conference Centre (Virginia).
