2016 Local Government Elections

The number of seats in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality reduced to 71 with the 2016 local government elections. There were 207,975 registered voters in the local municipality for the 2016 local government elections. The highest voter turn-out was achieved in Ward 34 with 60.71 %. The lowest voter turn-out in the municipality was in Ward 24 with 43.22 %. The average voter turn-out achieved in the 2016 municipal elections was 54.81 %.

Following the 2016 local government elections, five political parties are represented in the Council. The African National Congress was returned as the majority party with 46 seats. The Democratic Alliance holds 16 seats; the Economic Freedom Fighters holds 6 seats with the Congress of the People, the Freedom Front Plus and the United Front of Civics each holding 1 seat.

The Matjhabeng Local Municipality has 72 seats. There were 203,594 registered voters in the local municipality for the 2011 local government elections. The highest voter turn-out was achieved in Ward 17 with 65.32 %. The lowest voter turn-out in the municipality was in Ward 24 with 40.94 %. The average voter turn-out achieved in the 2011 municipal elections was 54.78 %.Following the 2011 local government elections, four political parties are represented in the Council.
