Matjhabeng Local Municipality Speaker Cllr Bhekumuzi Charles Stofile is a new president of South African Local Government Association (SALGA).

The election took place following Salga’s two day national conference held recently in Cape Town. Stofile who is serving a third term as Speaker of Matjhabeng Local Municipality is be deputised by Executive Mayor of the Buffalo City municipality in the Eastern Cape Cllr Xola Phakati, Executive Mayor of Govan Mbeki local municipality in Mpumalanga Cllr Flora Maboa-Boltman and City of Cape Town’s Cllr Xathea Limberg.

Stofile who joined the Local Government in 2011, says municipalities need money so they can deliver services. “We have launched a new campaign called ‘Asisho! Let’s say it… a civic responsibility campaign”, he said adding that it is no secret that across the three spheres of government, local government receives the least from the national fiscus, and gets just over 9 percent on a an annual basis.

Stofile has earned respect from all his political peers owing to his diplomacy, good listening skills, fairness, firm and assertiveness.
